Lake Stewards Membership Call 2016
Of all years, this is the year to become a member Lake Steward. We have so much going on that is so important to the lake. Your membership of only $30.00 or $100.00 for a business will be sincerely appreciated. In return, we will send you a minimum of 5 newsletters to keep you up to date about the lake and our work. See our membership page for how to join.
What we are doing this year for the lake:
With the Working Group for a Healthy Lake Scugog, we are working on the Lake Scugog Enhancement Project. This project should see vast amounts of stormwater cleaned of its burden of silt, salt and other pollutants that run into the lake from the south of urban Port Perry. This project will see the dredging of a large portion of Port Perry Bay and the Municipal boat launch that will prove beneficial to our whole economy, will improve the area environmentally, increase the recreation value and generally improve the area aesthetically for the community and the tourist industry. The design for this project should be complete this summer or early fall.
This will be a huge project requiring a good deal of money raised to complete. If you would like to work on this project raising funds in any way, please contact us at scugoglakestewards@gmail.com.
There is also the research we are doing with U.O.I.T. to understand the changes in the vegetation in the Lake and how it will be affecting the habitat value of the lake for fish and many other species. We are very excited about this potentially 4 to 5 year partnership with U.O.I.T. and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry.
There is our work with Kawartha Conservation on what is called Bluescaping. This is a landscape technique that is not only attractive but infiltrates runoff at the source. If individuals, businesses and the municipality use this method for ‘percolating’ back-lot water into the soil to be cleaned and to renew the water table, we save tax dollars down the road that would otherwise have to go to costly stormwater infrastructure building and maintenance. Bluescaping will be both an educational project and will see the first municipal ‘rain garden’ built in Port Perry.
There is our work with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry on walleye re-population and regulation as well as our constant monitoring and lobbying for water level stability.
Thank you so much for your consideration membership. We look forward to working with you.
