Eurasian watermilfoil is an invasive weed from Europe that has plagued Lake Scugog and other lakes in the Kawarthas for decades. In recent years, a native insect, the milfoil weevil has been made commercially available throughout Ontario. This insect feeds on the upper portion of the milfoil impacting its ability to grow. Additionally, this insect does not feed on other aquatic plants and is not a biting insect or a nuisance to people or pets.
Although the insect is already present in Lake Scugog, it is often in low numbers incapable of reducing the amount of Eurasian watermilfoil in the lake. To combat this weed, EnviroScience Inc. on behalf of the Scugog Lake Stewards is planning to stock 10,000 milfoil weevils in a pilot project adjacent to Aldred’s Beach.
For more information, please feel free to join us at the upcoming public information meeting on July 3, 2014 at 7:00pm at Scugog Arena and Skating Rink.
