Science Socials

THROUGHOUT NORTH AMERICA AND EVEN THE WORLD, LAKES AND PONDS ARE GETTING BLOOMS OF CYANOBACTERIA, OR WHAT IS KNOWN AS BLUE GREEN ALGAE! We often have a problem in the fall in certain areas that have high phosphorus levels, warm weather, still conditions and little flow-through.
But in 2024, why did both Lake Scugog and Lake Simcoe get a simultaneous toxic bloom in mid summer? This was very odd! Why did it happen? What does it mean for the future?

MAKE SURE YOU ATTEND OUR NEXT SCIENCE SOCIAL to hear Researcher, Flavia Breje from Ontario Tech. University, explain her findings as to why this happened, — May 19, 2026, Church of the Ascension, North Street, Port Perry, starting at 7pm. Also, Nathan Rajevski, of Kawartha Conservation will outline the results of our partnership in the Citizen Science Nearshore testing program that we are and have been involved in with KC. The Lake Stewards’ research group wants to help shoreline owners, local authorities and the general public, understand as much as possible about the increasing problem of algae, harmful or helpful. We are bringing in three Ontario experts for you, including our own Director, Dr. Ken Wilson from Ontario Tech., to talk to you in a panel-type forum. There will be ample time for questions at the end. It would be great if you would let us know in advance of your attendance.

June 3, 2025:

DIFFERENT TIMES, DIFFERENT CARE! Why do you need to pump your septic tank more often than in Grandma’s time? What helps? What hinders? The Scugog Lake Stewards’ next Science Social, Tuesday, June 3, will help you understand how to keep the living biology of your personal wastewater treatment plant, happy and healthy.

The way you maintain your septic system affects not only your life but the health of the lake water quality.
