Starry Stonewort: Is your Lake Capable of Hosting the Connoisseur of Clean Waters
The attached is the most readable information we have found regarding the new invasive alga from Eurasia called Starry Stonewort which is now found in Lake Scugog. Vast meadows of this alga seem to have replaced the hybrid Eurasian watermilfoil that plagued our lake for the last 10 years. The information in picture form, gives a really good idea of what we are experiencing. Scott Brown has been researching this species and its effect on lakes in Michigan and Wisconsin for many years.
You will see that although this alga and its associated native alga Chara has made our lake much clearer and also made it visually more more attractive, its long term effect on the lake or its fish population is unknown. The Lake Stewards are gathering together a wide range of experts to try to understand all the factors. So keep posted, this new ‘roller-coaster’ is just beginning.
